Scotland 7s will meet hosts Australia, Argentina and Samoa in Pool D at the Gold Coast 7s on Saturday 12 October. This will be the second year in a row they will share their group with the Wallabies.
The Gold Coast 7s, the first round of the HSBC Sevens World Series, will officially begin the 2013/14 season and lay down another marker in Scotland 7s’ journey towards the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: “We’re looking forward to taking our first step towards Glasgow 2014 next July and measuring where we are at.
“We’ve had a good pre-season. We come into this competition in the fourth group of seeds, so naturally the draw was always going to be difficult. However, it’s a new season and Argentina and Samoa have new coaching staff so it’ll be tough to analyse them fully.
“As far as Australia is concerned, it’s their home tournament so they’ll come into this group with a lot of potential.”
Scotland 7s beat each of their opponents once in the 2012/13 series, Australia 29-14 in Dubai, Argentina 35-5 in New Zealand and Samoa 21-17 in Japan, it’s these convincing victories they will look to build on this season.
Gemmell continued: “We’ve shown when we play our game at the top level we are capable of getting results, so we will continue working on doing that more often.
“We will research and look at all three of our opponents, but more importantly we will focus on executing our own game plan. The times that we have been successful, and unsuccessful for that matter, it has come down to the things we have done.”
Timings for the three group matches on the Gold Coast are as follows. Australia at 4.04am, Samoa at 6.58am and then Argentina at 9.08am (all UK time).
The squad will have a chance to fine-tune their preparations ahead of the opening leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series when they travel to Bucharest next weekend (21 and 22 September) to play in the FIRA-AER European Grand Prix Sevens Series.
In Romania the side will play Russia, France, Spain, Germany and Ukraine in Pool B. They will play four group games on the Saturday and then one on the Sunday before progressing to the knock-out stages.
