McColl added to Scotland squad as Scott ruled out

Matt Scott, the Edinburgh Rugby centre, has been ruled out of the remainder of Scotland’s viagogo Autumn Tests.

Scott, 23, sustained a hand injury in the closing stages of Scotland’s 42-17 victory against Japan last weekend.

Scotland team doctor James Robson said: “Matt was seen by consultant surgeon Doug Campbell at SPIRE Leeds yesterday and it was confirmed he has sustained a fracture to a bone in his hand.

“Happily, Matt does not require surgery.  The usual return to play from an injury of this nature is approximately six weeks.
“Matt will now be in the care of the Edinburgh Rugby medical team and we wish him a speedy recovery.”

Dr Robson added: “Both Ryan Grant and Alastair Kellock (the Glasgow Warriors prop and lock) are continuing to make good progress on the return to play protocol following the concussive episodes they sustained at the weekend.

“Stand off Duncan Weir (Glasgow Warriors) was examined at SPIRE Shawfair Hospital in Edinburgh yesterday following the groin injury he suffered against Japan. He has minor soft tissue damage and is making good progress under the care of our physios, Paul McGinley and Stephen Mutch.

“His team-mate, Tim Swinson, continues to recover from the shoulder injury he sustained against Japan, though he will not be training this afternoon.

“Nor will Greig Laidlaw train this afternoon as he is undergoing re-hab and recovery from a calf injury from the weekend.”

Additions to squad

Although Scotland’s casualties are on the mend, a number of players have been called up to the squad for this week’s preparations for the viagogo Autumn Test against South Africa at Murrayfield on Sunday.

They are the Edinburgh Rugby capped quartet, backs Jack Cuthbert, Tom Brown and Lee Jones and flanker Ross Rennie; the Glasgow Warriors pair, capped prop Jon Welsh and Scotland 7s internationalist centre/wing Byron McGuigan; and the 25-year-old uncapped Leeds Carnegie full-back/centre Stevie McColl (pictured below, pic courtesy of Leeds Carnegie).

McColl, the former Scotland 7s and age-grade player, who was players’ player of the season at the English Championship club in 2012-13, has been called up to the Scotland squad for the first time.

McColl, a strapping 6ft 2ins and 15st 6lbs, a product of Dunfermline RFC and schooled at Inverkeithing High, has been tracked by the Scotland selectors since he moved to Doncaster Knights in 2008 and during his time with Leeds Carnegie, for whom he is now in his third season.

The Scotland team to play South Africa is due to be announced tomorrow.
