Jones to make HSBC Sevens World Series return

Scotland and Edinburgh Rugby winger, Lee Jones will win his 12th Scotland 7s cap in Dubai (29-30 November) after being named in the squad that will travel to the second and third legs of the HSBC Sevens World Series this weekend.

Jones brings with him a wealth of knowledge from the seven-a-side game as well as valuable experience from the XV-a-side version.

Also returning to the squad is Scotland 7s captain, Colin Gregor, who missed out on the Gold Coast due to a calf injury and forward Chris Dean, who has recovered from an ankle sprain. These players come into replace the injured trio from Australia, James Fleming, Michael Fedo and Struan Dewar.

The remaining nine players that will travel to Dubai and South Africa were involved on the Gold Coast. They are Scott Riddell, who’ll win his 25th World Series cap, Gregor Young and Joseva Nayacavou, who’ll both win their second caps for the abbreviated national team, John Houston, Mark Robertson, Alex Glashan, James Johnstone, Andrew Turnbull and Michael Maltman.

Scotland 7s head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Lee [Jones] back into the squad, who brings with him a wealth of sevens and XVs experience.

He was a part of our squad in Glasgow and London earlier this year and had a huge influence on the way we performed and helping us secure our core team status for this season. On top of that we also welcome back our team captain, Colin Gregor and I know that our performances will benefit from both his leadership skills and playing ability.

“We not only want to be more competitive in the World Series but we're also aiming towards giving ourselves the best possible chance to medal at the Commonwealth Games in eight months time and introducing an international winger is part of our preparations.”

In Dubai, a week on Friday (29 November), Scotland 7s will meet current series runners up Australia (7.10am), with whom they drew 21-all on the Gold Coast and will also go head-to-head with Wales (12.02pm) and Spain (3.40pm). All times are UK times.

Their day two fixtures (Saturday 30 November) will be determined by results on day one and the draw for South Africa will take place prior to the Dubai Cup final a week on Saturday.

Gemmell continued: “I believe the last two weeks of training have been the best we’ve had since I came back into the squad in January. It has been intense and clinical and we have replicated match days with games against Scottish Rugby’s Elite Development and Regional Academy players and our wider squad made up of club players.

When we run out in Dubai and Port Elizabeth we have to make sure we impose our game on the opposition both in attack and defence and ensure that we make ourselves much more difficult for the opposition to break down."

As well as the announcement of the squad, Scottish Rugby have launched their first phase of marketing for the Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s, this week, with images of Colin Gregor and Michael Fedo in their finest circus wear. Fans will have their first chance to catch a glimpse of the campaign at this weekend's final viagogo Autumn Test at Murrayfield v Australia (Saturday 23 November, kick-off 6pm).

Scotland 7s squad to compete in the Dubai (29-30 November) and South Africa 7s (7-8 December): Scott Riddell, Chris Dean, Gregor Young, Joseva Nayacavou (Heriot’s), John Houston, Mark Robertson, Alex Glashan, Colin Gregor (captain), James Johnstone, Andrew Turnbull, Lee Jones (Edinburgh Rugby) and Michael Maltman.
