Earlier this week Morriston Park, home to Moray RFC, hosted a very special fixture in memory of an outstanding local rugby lad.
Matthew Campbell, 16-year-old pupil at nearby Elgin Academy, passed away on 3 January this year following a brave battle against cancer. Academic, outgoing and a friend to many, Matthew was also a staunch rugby supporter and his classmates decided to honour his memory by staging a rugby match between an Elgin Schools under-18 side and a Moray West under-18 team.
Organised by classmate Tara Cameron with support from Katie Morison, Moray Development Officer George Whitecross and Regional Development Manager Peter Young, it was the taking part rather than the result that was important in this Matthew Campbell Memorial Shield fixture, though the School team edged West to lift the trophy.
Matthew's parents joined schoolmates, teachers, family and friends for the match, played out in glorious sunshine with the spirit of rugby to the fore. Catch a flavour of the afternoon in the video here.
