Edinburgh Rugby head coach Alan Solomons today praised the squad’s character after securing a first win on the road of the season in beating Dragons 23-19 at Rodney Parade last night.
The club had picked up three consecutive losing bonus points on the road leading up to the game, against Connacht, Scarlets and Treviso on Saturday, with the coach believing the team were consistently building to this breakthrough.
The win not only broke the club’s duck this season, but was also the first win in Newport in eight years.
Solomons said: “It was a fantastic performance by the team.
They showed huge character in winning this game bearing, in mind a number of challenging factors.
“They played Treviso on the weekend, returned to Edinburgh on Sunday night and on Wednesday were were back on the road again; we lost Ross Ford – a key player in our side – after just 20 minutes; for the last ten minutes they were down to 14 men; and there was the huge pressure on this team to win this game, in order to keep our hopes of finishing in the top half of the table alive.
“When one looks at all of those factors, I think the side showed unbelievable character.
“I’m enormously proud of the guys. I thought it was a great team effort and I thought Mike Coman showed terrific leadership.
It was a win that we thoroughly deserved. We have been building to that in the last three games on the road where, each time, we’ve picked up a losing bonus point.
“We just had to cross that divide, which we did last night.”
