Scottish Rugby has confirmed today that national newspaper, the Daily Record, will sponsor this year’s Festival of Rugby at the third Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s with an amazing prize for the winners.
The two-day event on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May, which will take place on the Scotstoun Stadium 3G pitch, will see youngsters from across Scotland competing in a series of different competitions, showcasing the grassroots game in Scotland.
The festival is also an integral part of the Scottish Government’s legacy initiative ahead of this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
One of the main features in this year’s festival is that the two winners of the under-18 boys’ competition will win the chance to play on the main pitch at Ibrox during the Commonwealth Games rugby sevens event on Sunday 27 July.
Scottish Rugby’s regional development manager for Glasgow North and Festival of Rugby organiser, Alex Edmonstone, said: “The Festival of Rugby has been a brilliant and successful event for the past two years. We’re delighted to ramp up expectations for this year’s Festival that runs alongside the international sevens tournament with the Daily Record sponsorship and giving players a once in a lifetime prize in the under-18 boys’ competition.
“We have worked closely with Glasgow 2014 to secure this fabulous opportunity and thank them for all their support in helping us to showcase the grassroots of our game.”
Some 37 clubs from across Scottish Rugby’s eight rugby regions have confirmed they will take part in the various competitions so far.
Head of Sport at the Daily Record, Austin Barrett, said: “The Daily Record Festival of Rugby will be another great event in this historic year for Scottish sport and we're thrilled to be right behind such an exciting initiative.
"Grassroots sport is so vital to our nation's future and this event is a fabulous showcase for rugby's most talented kids. It promises to be a terrific family weekend."
On Saturday 3 May, an under-18 16-team knockout competition will be played with a Cup and Plate trophy up for grabs. The Cup final will be played on the main pitch. Then on Sunday (4 May) there will be tournaments for S1 and S2 boys and under-15 and under-18 girls.
The format for the girls’ event is still to be determined, while the S1 and S2 boys’ competitions will be scored using the Positive Coaching Scotland criteria that seeks to reward tries, individual skills, team ethics, respect towards the referee and sportsmanship.
As well as the youth tournaments, Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities will go head-to-head in a one-off sevens game at 1.26pm on the Sunday on the main pitch, details of which were announced last week.
