Cartha the queens of the park

A 27-12 victory for Cartha Queens Park ladies over their Watsonians counterparts secured them the Women’s RBS Shield today (Saturday 19 April) at Dalziel Park.

Cartha had the upper hand throughout the game, yet the desire of Watsonians to stay in the tie was evident as they held on for the first 60 minutes of the match, the pace and intelligence of the Glasgow side’s back-line soon shining through to snatch the victory in the latter stages of the game.

There were three tries to speak of in the first 40 minutes, a further two Cartha scores disallowed, as the Glasgow side went into the break with a 10-5 lead.

Cartha opened the scoring in the first five minutes of the game following an intelligent quick tap penalty to allow back-row Siobhan McMillan to crash over.

The game fell stagnant for much of the first period, although the sin-binning of Cartha’s most influential player, scrum-half Kay Chan, put them on the back-foot.  Watsonians took advantage of their extra asset and their captain Emily Cotterill crashed over the line to bring the scores level (5-5).

However, the player advantage was soon nulled as Watsonians' stand-out player Karen Dunbar joined Chan on the sidelines for 10 minutes.

To close the half, Cartha’s vibrant full-back Deeanne McLaren scampered over the line to give her side a 10-5 lead.

Both teams came out firing in the second half, Watsonians making it 12-10 in the opening minutes of the period, centre Cat Knott the scorer with replacement Georgie Hamsworth adding the extras.

Cartha immediately replied as back-row Siobhan McMillan grabbed her second score of the day to put her side 15-12 in front.

This was the spark the Glasgow side needed to shut out the game, McLaren crossing the line a further two times, both scores a product of the sharp sniping of player of the match Kay Chan. Centre Ellie Sutherland converted the latter of the tries, closing the scores at 27-12.
