Inspiring opportunity for young rugby players at Glasgow 7s

Scotland 7s’ guard of honour at the forthcoming Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s (3-4 May) will represent the nationwide interest of the abbreviated game, with two schools from opposite ends of the country being selected to welcome the national team onto the pitch in the eighth leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series.

Glasgow 7s guard of honourHyndland Secondary School, situated some 1.7 miles away from Scotstoun Stadium will fly flags on one side of the guard, with the Nicolson Institute, Stornoway representing the other side.  They will travel some 288 miles to be a part of the weekend’s activity.

Iain Campbell, under-16 head coach at Stornoway Rugby Club, said: “We have quite a big itinerary planned out for the sevens weekend.  We are bringing down ten under-16 players who have never played sevens before, but we have arranged to meet the Scotland and Wales national 7s teams and to play a game against Belmont House School.

“The visit is part of the Commonwealth Games Legacy programme and is an opportunity for our players to try a new version of rugby, get some game time and meet the stars of the sport.

There is a huge buzz with everybody, I’m getting excited just telling the players.  It’s a great honour that will be appreciated and enjoyed by everyone.  It’s a unique opportunity that I hope will encourage more people to get involved in rugby back in Lewis.”

The two schools were selected to take up the guard of honour after purchasing tickets for the event using Scottish Rugby’s group offer for clubs and schools, details of which are below.  Hyndland will bring 20 young rugby players to experience the international sevens and form the guard of honour.

Scotland 7s play Australia (12.42pm), USA (4.10pm) and Spain (7.21pm) on day one at the Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s.
