Glasgow University and Edinburgh University sevens teams have both confirmed their 12-man squads for this Sunday’s (4 May) showcase match at the Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s (kick-off 1.26pm).
The Glasgow team comes into the game having finished third in this year’s BUCS Scottish 1A league and having retained the Glasgow Cup.
The team is led by Scott McKean who plays regularly for Watsonians on the Kings of the Sevens circuit and who was a member of the Scottish Thistles team in the GB7s series last summer.
McKean’s opposite number leading the Edinburgh team is Noah Pflaum. Edinburgh University recently reached the semi-finals at the Berwick 7s on the Border circuit.
Glasgow University head coach, Calum Forrester, said: “We enjoyed a third place finish in BUCS Scottish 1A in what was our first season back in the top flight of Scottish University rugby in a number of years.
“The team also retained the Glasgow Cup, an inter-varsity competition with Strathclyde and Glasgow Caley.
“In preparation for Sunday’s match the boys have been focusing on sevens for a while. They hosted their own sevens and competed at the St Andrews 7s. In both tournaments they made it to the final but lost narrowly to the Minerva Builders, on both occasions, who are captained by one of our coaches and Scotland 7s international Peter Jericevich.
Performances at these tournaments have made selection very tough and all boys have been desperate to play. The squad will be captained by Scott McKean who has a lot of 7s experience.
“Playing at Scotstoun this Sunday is a great opportunity to play in perhaps the largest crowd they will have ever played in front of. It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase university rugby in a derby match against Edinburgh.”
Edinburgh University head coach, David Adamson, said: “Despite the sevens season always coinciding with the University's exam period, Edinburgh University has always placed a great emphasis on sevens. We have played in a number of the Borders King of the 7s tournaments so far this season, with our best finish being at Berwick where we were beaten in the semi-final by Jed Forest.
“We also recently played in the British University 7s championships down in Bristol where we beat Liverpool University comfortably, but lost narrowly to eventual finalists Northumbria University.
The squad, and club as a whole, is very excited about the forthcoming game. Despite having played in a number of tournaments already this season, this is definitely the game all the squad wants to be selected for.
“We expect a tough game against Glasgow who we know can call upon a number of players who have been playing for their local clubs recently, and who have the expertise of their assistant coach and Scotland 7s cap, Peter Jericevich, to call on.
“To have the opportunity to play a game on the same billing as the world's best sevens players; in front of, what will no doubt be, a partisan Glasgow crowd against one of our oldest rivals isn't something you get the chance to do all that often. We can't wait."
Glasgow University 7s squad: Richard Murdoch, Ben Docherty, Jamie Cook, Jack Somerville, Blair Couper, Dom Lawson, Sam Bullock, Andrew Warnock, Guy Fairburn, Mark Jackson, Scott McKean (captain) and John Rae.
Edinburgh University 7s squad: Hugh Browne, Phil Blazquez, Iain Sexton, Ian Vance, Will Stephen, Noah Pflaum (captain), Ryan O'Leary, Brad Meeson, Alex Ashand Rory Jones.
