Turnbull motivated by noisy home support

Scotland 7s completed their preparations for the Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s tomorrow (3 May) with a captain’s run at Scotstoun Stadium today.

Lee Jones and Andrew Turnbull are joined by Emirates Airline crew

The next time they will take to the Scotstoun turf will be tomorrow at 12.42pm when they meet Australia in their first tie of the penultimate leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series.

They will also face-off with USA (4.10pm) and Spain (7.21pm) in pool D.  Scotland 7s’ top points scorer, Andrew Turnbull, will win his 56th cap tomorrow if he takes to the field and if he touches down twice he’ll reach an epic landmark of 150 tries.

However, it isn't these stats that drive him on it's a noisy crowd behind the team, so today, Turnbull has given a call to Scotland fans to come and support their country at Scotstoun tomorrow.

He said: “Stats are good, but they are not my main motivation.  I am driven by the challenge of playing against the best rugby players in the world.  Also playing in front of a home crowd is an added incentive.  I want to do my best for them and when they are noisy I feel I lift my game.

“The captain’s run today was sharp.  We have players who pose a threat all over the pitch, which is good. I hope that comes out tomorrow too.

The Commonwealth Games is just round the corner now, I can’t wait to get out there tomorrow and make Stevie’s [Gemmell] decision as difficult as possible.  I hope I can put myself forward.

Scotland 7s played their best rugby all year on day three in Hong Kong last month, the previous leg of the World Series.  Turnbull scored four times in that tournament.

He continued: “It is good to have the momentum we built up from Hong Kong and it’ll be important now to take that forward into Glasgow and London next weekend.”

Turnbull will also be joined by former Edinburgh Rugby team-mate Nick De Luca.  The pair last pulled on the Scotland 7s jersey together in Melbourne, Hong Kong and Singapore in 2006.  Turnbull concluded:

Nick is a fantastic rugby player and he adds to the dynamic of this squad.  I’m really looking forward to playing with him again tomorrow.”
