Colin Gregor scores v Australia in Glasgow

Scotland 19-7 Australia

It was the ideal start to the Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s this afternoon for Scotland 7s.  They opened their campaign with a 19-7 win against Australia and built a strong platform to strive for qualification to the Cup quarter-finals on day two.

Head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: "We didn't start the we way wanted to, but the players showed character, accuracy and a hard work-rate and we managed to come back and win.

"We now have a platform to build on, but this is only game one, we have to back that performance up. Quality teams back performances like that up."

The side started well, but let the first points slip into their opponents hands when Cameron Clark crossed for the Wallabies early.  However, minutes later a decisive score from Scott Riddell, who was impressive throughout the match, brought the scoreboard level.

Captain, Colin Gregor having converted the first try, then put his side in front, on the half-time hooter, when he picked up a perfect pass from Nick De Luca and was in under the posts.  The Scots led 14-7 at half-time.

The score remained unchanged for the majority of the second period and both sides made it to each others 22, but were let down by penalties and handling errors.  At this point Australia had slightly more possession, but the Scots were resilient in defence, Riddell leading by example.

With seconds left on the clock Scott Wight, who also commanded the game well from stand-off, put his supporting man, Lee Jones into space, for the final and decisive try of the match.  Gregor converted the first two tries.

Scotland 26-0 USA

Scotland 7s put in a clinical performance in their second match of the first day of the Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s, beating USA, 26-0.

Head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: "Credit to the players, they knew what they needed to do and they were clinical and accurate.

We need to keep improving for our third match against Spain and show we're moving forward and becoming more consistent in our play."

From the outset Scotland controlled the game, with Scott Riddell and Richie Vernon tearing up the pitch.  Their play in the breakdown was particulalry impressive.  Also, Lee Jones showed his flare on the wing with a brace in the match and Colin Gregor boasted his game sense with a number of assists.

Chris Dean touched down in the second-half, seconds after coming onto the pitch and Nick De Luca, made a lovely step inside to score his first sevens try since 2006, at the end of the first half.  Gregor converted three of the four scores.

The most impressive element of the game was, just like against Australia, their opposition were never able to create any real threat, as Scotland closed them down quickly.
