Edinburgh Accies full-back, Nyle Godsmark, has been named captain of the Scottish Thistles team to compete in the first leg of the GB7s this weekend.
Godsmark is joined by team mate, Iain Chisholm in the 12, with two players also named from Melrose, the 2014 King of the Sevens champions. They are Callum Anderson, who has one Scotland 7s cap on the HSBC Sevens World Series circuit and Richard Mill.
One professional makes the cut, with Scotland 7s’ Gregor Young, who has won six caps on the IRB circuit this year named and one exile in former Border Reiver, Dougie Flockhart who comes in from Doncaster Knights.
Head coach, Graham Shiel, said: “As part of the Scotland 7s set-up I have been working with a group of club players throughout the year, some of whom have past experience in the GB7s and the World Series.
I have completed the selection with some new players who have performed well in the Legacy and Kings circuits. I think this is a strong squad.
“In terms of Nyle taking up the role as captain, this is a good opportunity for him to further his experience. He has captained Accies this year and trained well when with Scotland 7s at Ravenscraig. This is a good chance for him to develop his responsibilities in leading a team.
“Our aim this weekend is to try to take a step forward from last year and secure a top four finish. We know it will be a very competitive tournament with some tough opposition, but I believe we have a good squad who are excited about progressing their rugby and taking the next step up.”
The remainder of the team is made up of RBS Premiership and National League players, including Dean Kelbrick (Ayr), Murray Douglas, Liam Steele (both Heriot’s), Darren Clapperton (Selkirk), George Horne (Currie) and Alex Cox (Boroughmuir).
Scottish Thistles will play Crawshays Welsh, Wailers and The British Army in tomorrow’s tournament at Allianz Park, London. Games will begin from 2.20pm.
