Cox and Mill make step-up from Scottish Thistles

Some two new caps will play for Scotland 7s this weekend in the FIRA-AER Grand Prix Sevens tournament in Lyon (Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 June).

Richard Mill adds a Scotland 7s cap to his Club International outingBoroughmuir's wing Alex Cox and Melrose stand-off Richard Mill (pictured), have played with the Scottish Thistles the past two weekends in the GB7s Series and will take the next step-up in the international short game, after being named in the Scotland 7s squad to compete in Lyon.

Also, included is Scottish Thistles captain, Nyle Godsmark of Edinburgh Accies who won a cap in the same FIRA tournament exactly a year ago.  He scored two tries in that event.

Head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: "Nyle [Godsmark], Alex [Cox], Richard [Mill] and Gregor [Young] have all done well with the Scottish Thistles the last few weeks and Nyle and Alex now have an opportunity at a higher level.

We want to give the players who do well a progression and it is a first chance for Alex and Richard to see how they cope pulling on the Scotland 7s jersey.

The remainder of the squad is made up of full-time Scotland 7s professionals, Struan Dewar, Colin Shaw, Mark Robertson, Gregor Young, Colin Gregor, Scott Wight, James Johnstone, James Fleming and Andrew Turnbull.

Gemmell continued: "A number of our full time players are needing game time following injuries.  This is a chance for these players to prove the level they are capable of playing at.

"This for me is just like any other international competition, it will act as our preparations for next season's HSBC Sevens World Series and the Commonwealth Games.

"The players have trained hard the last few weeks and put the disappointment of the Glasgow 2014, Team Scotland selection behind them.”

Scotland 7s are in Group A on Saturday with England, Wales and Belgium.  They play Wales at 10.06am, England at 12 noon and Belgium at 3pm (all UK time).

Gemmell concluded: "This is a tough pool.  We are familiar with England and Wales and they will provide us with some stiff competition.

"Belgium have been promoted from the Division A so they will be looking to prove that they can compete at this level of international competition.”
