Scotland 7s have ended their first week back in camp with sprints up Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh.
With only two weeks until the abbreviated national team’s first competitive tournament of the season, the Manchester 7s part of the Rugby Europe Grand Prix Sevens Series, new head coach, Calum MacRae has wasted no time putting the group through their paces.
He said: “This week has been about getting to know all the players, their personalities and work ethic.
We have been doing strength and conditioning testing, which has gone well and next week I will sit down one on one with the senior players to look at the squad’s expectations and values going forward."
MacRae, who won 13 caps for Scotland 7s in his playing days and who takes the reins from former head coach Stephen Gemmell, believes the group is in a good place ahead of the forthcoming Rugby Europe competitions and HSBC Sevens World Series.
He said: “Stevie [Gemmell] developed a strong culture and work ethic with this group, so I’m coming into a very strong foundation. I’m happy with the players’ fitness levels as a starting point and it is clear from my first week this is a very hard-working outfit.
Scotland 7s have two Rugby Europe tournaments, in Manchester (Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September) and Bucharest (Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September), before the World Series begins on the Gold Coast, Australia on Saturday 11 October.
MacRae continued: “Manchester and Bucharest will give everyone an opportunity to show what they can bring to this squad.
“This season is a fresh start and everyone is on a level playing-field to express themselves. With the quick turnaround we will not go into the nitty-gritty rugby specifics, we will keep our game-plan simple and everyone will be asked to continue to work very very hard.”
