BT Volunteer reaps rewards for regional revival

A volunteer from Argyll and Bute has won the first BT Volunteer of the Month award for season 2014/15.

BT Volunteer of the Month (September 2014) - Tommy Sutherland (Oban Lorne)Tommy Sutherland, 31, from Oban Lorne and Argyll & Bute rugby clubs was the standout candidate from a list of ten excellent nominations, who were put forward for the September award.

Perhaps his most impressive contribution is that he was responsible for reviving and now managing Argyll and Bute Rugby Club which brings players together from Bute, Kintyre, Mid-Argyll and Islay to ensure they have regular and quality game time.

This season the club has entered BT West Regional League Division 4.

During the winning month, Tommy, who works as a hotel manager in Oban, helped coach the ladies team in the town, as well as the under-16 boys team and the School of Rugby at Oban High School.

He organised and catered for the annual club dinner, continued to send out a weekly club bulletin that he is responsible for and turned out for the first XV in the front-row.

Sutherland said: “I was ecstatic when I found out I had won the award. I just love rugby, everyone is great craic and I enjoy being involved with a club.

“When I first came to Oban I wasn’t playing rugby but they were short on numbers and the coach asked me if I wanted to take part, from there everything fell in place for me to get more involved.

We want to drive Oban Lorne and rugby in the region forward, so in August last year we tried setting up a second XV but that didn’t work so we formed Argyll & Bute Rugby Club to provide a vessel for more players to play rugby.

“Results haven’t gone our way but we’re now providing a means for rugby to grow in the area and to give players some proper game time.

“Back at Oban Lorne I’d love to see the club promoted into BT West Regional League Division 1 and see how far we can go.”

In winning the BT Volunteer of the Month award for September, Tommy will receive a table-of-ten at the annual Scottish Rugby Club Awards Dinner at BT Murrayfield on Friday 29 May 2015 and a commemorative trophy.
