Riddell ready to return home

Scotland 7s will go toe-to-toe with Fiji, Wales and Portugal, in Pool C, at the Emirates Airline Rugby 7s, at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow next month (9-10 May).

Scott Riddell v American Samoa earlier this seasonThe Scots will look to build on their current placing in the HSBC Sevens World Series standings when they return from their travels to their home event in Glasgow.

They are currently ranked in seventh place, with an opportunity to complete the circuit with their highest seeding ever, improving on their previous highest finish of ninth.

Scott Riddell, who captained the side in their last two tournaments in Hong Kong and Tokyo, said: “We spend the majority of our season playing overseas, so, our home tournament is something all the players look forward to.

“It's a huge honour to represent your country on home soil and to have the crowd behind you is an amazing feeling.

We secured 12 Series points and finished in sixth place in Tokyo, after a big squad effort and a lot of our hard work in training showing in our tournament performances.

“It’s a tough group for Glasgow. Portugal have been playing some really good sevens this season, they drew with New Zealand in Hong Kong, and have an experienced squad with plenty of attacking threat.

“Wales are an extremely hard working side and solid at the breakdown, while Fiji’s season has been outstanding. They will attack any team from anywhere and are vying for the World Series title.

“Although it’s a challenging group, our aim is to progress into the Cup competition, which means winning two games of our three pool matches at least.

“That is something we’re more than capable of doing.”

This is the first international sevens event in the city to follow the world record breaking tournament at the 2014 Commonwealth Games last summer, which Riddell was a part of.

I have never experienced such an incredible atmosphere, which definitely adds to the excitement of heading back to Glasgow.

“The crowd can really push you on when things get tough. The boys definitely feed off the excitement and energy generated by the fans.”

Also, after winning the HSBC Sevens World Series qualifier tournament in Hong Kong, Russia have been confirmed as the guest team for Glasgow. This will be their first opportunity to run out against the circuit’s core teams, before joining the Series full time from the beginning of the 2015/16 season.
