Riddell set to win 40th cap in front of packed home crowd

Scotland 7s captain Scott Riddell, who played in the Commonwealth Games Sevens at Ibrox last July, is relishing the opportunity to run out to a home crowd once again, at this weekend’s Emirates Airline Rugby 7s at Scotstoun Stadium (9-10 May).

This is the first international rugby event to take place in the city, since the world record breaking sevens event at Glasgow 2014, and the penultimate leg of the nine-tournament HSBC Sevens World Series, that began on the Gold Coast, Australia, last October.

Scotland 7s still have the chance to secure their best ever finish in the HSBC Sevens World Series to date, and with the buzz from the Commonwealth Games still very much alive, this weekend’s tournament has the recipe for a fantastic weekend for captain Riddell, who will win his 40th cap when he runs out on Saturday.

Speaking to scottishrugby.org at the Emirates Airline Rugby 7s captains press conference at Kelvingrove Art Gallery, this week, Riddell said: “Knowing this weekend is sold out and that there is demand for tickets inspires me personally.

I’m really looking forward to a packed Scotstoun, with the buzz off the back of the Commonwealth Games still being huge. I know it is going to carry on into this weekend.”

Scotland 7s will meet Portugal (1.04pm), Wales (4.10pm) and Fiji (7.21pm) on Saturday (9 May) in Pool C – live on Sky Sports.

Riddell continued: “We have a very tough group, but its one I know we can get out of and into the Cup quarter-finals on Sunday.

“We will need to ensure we don’t get overawed by the occasion, but we’re aiming to win at least two games in the pool and I’m really looking forward to it.”
