Johnstone rallies support for Glasgow 7s

Scotland 7s centre James Johnstone is relishing the chance to play in front of a packed home crowd at this weekend’s HSBC Sevens World Series in Glasgow.

James Johnstone at today's captains runHe is the side’s top try-scorer in the campaign, crossing the line 17 times but has never played in a home sevens tournament before on the World Series circuit.

He said: “I did manage to experience the Commonwealth Games last year and the home support there really helped us perform at our best, so I’m hoping for the same this weekend.

As players, we definitely feel that support, it pushes us on and gives us that wee bit more drive and adrenaline.”

Scotland’s first game is against Portugal at 1.04pm on Saturday (9 May), followed by their other two Pool C games against Wales at 4.10pm and Fiji at 7.21pm, the last match of the day.

Johnstone has reason to be optimistic, as Scotland have beaten both Portugal and Wales already this season, but are yet to overcome the south sea-islanders.

He said: “We have to take each game as it comes, as we have been doing all season.

“We’re concentrating on our first game against Portugal and then hopefully from there we can qualify for the Cup quarter-finals on day two.”
