BT Women’s Premier League PREVIEW | Wandies host Cougars in Edinburgh derby

This Sunday sees the return of the BT Women’s Premier League for 2018 as Murrayfield Wanderers welcome RHC Cougars to the back pitches of BT Murrayfield in an Edinburgh derby (kick-off 2pm).

The two sides met for the first time this season in September, when Cougars put in a plucky performance to defeat the reigning champions on home territory (26-36).

In their second encounter, the Wandies retaliated, securing a comfortable 19-34 victory at Union Park.

With one game apiece, it will be all to play for in what is anticipated to be a keenly contested fixture.

Murrayfield Wanderers Head Coach, Steve Turnbull, said: “We have had two tough games against Cougars this season and this Sunday will be no different.

“We’ve been preparing for a physical encounter this week and are looking forward to a good game of rugby.”

Since the league split, Wandies have enjoyed two wins and a draw, and are aiming to narrow the gap to current table leaders, Hillhead Jordanhill.

Turnbull continued: “We’ve shown consistent improvements throughout the season and have performed well since the split.

“It’s difficult for every team as there has not been a lot of rugby played over the last month, with the weather and Christmas break getting in the way.”

RHC Cougars will be looking to add some breathing space between themselves and Stirling County, as only one point currently separates the two sides in the table.

Elsewhere, Ayr host Stewartry in a battle of the west and Watsonians travel to Dumbreck to face Cartha Queens Park.

Stirling County’s match against Hillhead Jordanhill was postponed last night due to an unplayable pitch.

Clubs from across BT Women’s National Leagues 1 and 2 will also continue their season this weekend. For a full list of fixtures, visit
