Sarah Beaney Cup PREVIEW | Quarter-finalists set sights on Silver Saturday

The Sarah Beaney Cup continues this Sunday (25 March) with the teams looking to make a statement on the road to the final.

This year the Sarah Beaney Cup final, as part of BT Cup Finals Day, joins with the 1872 Cup clash between Edinburgh and Glasgow at BT Murrayfield on a day being dubbed 'SIlver Saturday'.

Edinburgh University host Watsonians (kick-off 2pm) in an Edinburgh derby as both teams battle it out to take a step closer to the showpiece event.

Head Coach of Edinburgh University, Claire Cruikshank, is looking forward to the game on Sunday after an entertaining meeting between the teams last year.

Cruickshank said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming Watsonians in the quarter final of the Sarah Beaney Cup this weekend in a repeat of the same stage last year.

“Last year’s game was a cracking, skilful and high scoring match and we’re expecting similar this Sunday.”

This fixture will carry extra weight for the university side as they target silverware after this week’s defeat to Exeter in the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Championship ended their title defence.

Last year’s finalists, Murrayfield Wanderers, will be another side eager to make their mark when they take on BT Women’s Premier League rivals, Stewartry (kick-off 2pm).

Murrayfield Wanderers Head Coach Steve Turnbull said: “We are expecting tough opposition from Stewartry, so we will have to come out of the blocks hard and do the basics right first. That has been our focus at training this week - getting the fundamentals right first and then the rest will follow.

“The weather has played havoc to the season, and as a result we have played very little rugby in the last few months so the players are itching to get back out on the pitch and get some game time.”

Elsewhere, there is another BT Women’s Premier League clash as Stirling County welcome RHC Cougars.

Champions Hillhead/Jordanhill came through their knock-out match against Cartha Queen’s Park with an emphatic victory away earlier in the week. The dominant 85-0 score-line will give them a confidence boost as they aim to make it to 'Silver Saturday' and retain the cup.
