Dumfries Saints named BT Club of the Month

Dumfries Saints have been named April BT Club of the Month for their impressive league form and commitment to developing youth rugby.

The club’s 1st XV enjoyed an unbeaten run in April in BT National League Division 2, finishing third, and were crowned winners of the inaugural BT National League Cup following a comprehensive win against Kelso.

Saints have maintained a strong link with local schools and have delivered sessions to over 1500 school students - including many from Maxwelltown High School’s CashBack School of Rugby - substantially increasing youth participation, supporting a Youth Coach Development Programme and participating in the SP Energy Networks Warriors Championship.

The development of women and girls’ rugby has gathered momentum this season with the club launching rugby for under-15 to under-18 girls and a community ladies’ rugby fit programme.

Club President, Issy Raineyexpressed her delight at Dumfries Saints being presented with the accolade.

She said: “It is a privilege to be President of this forward-looking club with a strong family ethos.

This month all the hard work put in by the senior players has paid off with a grandstand winning performance in the BT National League Cup.  We are all very proud of our team and their achievement.

“The family ethos was introduced by Head Coach Rudi Urbach and has helped bond not only the players but the whole army of volunteers who are committed to making our club the best through excellent coaching and good management.

“A huge amount of voluntary work goes into the welcoming, friendly, hospitable club that we are today, and the community has responded by giving us their support and sponsorship.”

The BT Club of the Month award celebrates on-pitch performance, discipline and player development.

To win, a club does not have to be the best in all three areas, but should show a successful balance, with potential for long-term growth.

Dumfries Saints will receive £200 plus a 12 month commercial BT Sport subscription for their clubhouse.

As a winning club they are also nominated for BT Club of the Season at the annual Club Awards Dinner at BT Murrayfield on Friday 1 June.
