From the playing field to the battlefield

Scottish Rugby have signed an innovative partnership with Netflix UK to promote Outlaw King, an upcoming historical action drama film which tells the true story of the great 14th Century Scottish warrior, Robert the Bruce.

The film, starring Chris Pine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Florence Pugh, was greatly enjoyed by Scotland players Stuart Hogg, Zander Fagerson, Tim Swinson and Damien Hoyland at the premiere in Edinburgh on Friday. Outlaw King launches on Netflix on 9th November - the eve of Scotland’s opening home Autumn Test match against Fiji.

Filmed at iconic landmarks across Scotland, telling the epic tale of Scottish history, and directed by Scottish filmmaker David Mackenzie, Scottish Rugby were the ideal partner for Netflix to help facilitate a variety of activities to engage fans throughout November.

The Scottish Rugby team even inadvertently had a hand in the film! Chris Pine - who plays outlaw-turned-king Robert the Bruce in the historical epic - explained last week that he studied videos of a former Scotland Rugby captain’s rousing speeches in order to perfect his Scottish accent.

Toni Blackhurst, Scottish Rugby’s Head of Marketing and Sponsorship, said: “It’s fantastic to work with such an iconic and creative brand as Netflix. Scottish Rugby prides itself on being innovative in our thinking and this partnership will deliver some exciting activations for our fans over the coming months.”

Danielle Rayner, Marketing Manager for Netflix UK added: "The natural synergy between the playing field and battlefield - sparking parallels of grit, tenacity and resilience - made Scottish Rugby the perfect partner through which to engage and excite our Scottish fans with Outlaw King. We are excited to be working with Scottish Rugby players and interacting with fans at the forthcoming Autumn Tests."

Scottish Rugby stars and fans attended the premiere of Outlaw King in Edinburgh, thanks to our partnership with Netflix.
