The Scotland Club XV represents the best players currently playing club rugby in Scotland. In 2012/13, Hawick head coach Phil Leck was asked to select the side for two fixtures during the RBS 6 Nations, against Ireland and France.
Following the win over the Ireland Club International Leck made two changes to his starting team for the match against their French counterparts in Bourgoin-Jallieu.
Fraser Thomson of Melrose was introduced at full-back with Currie’s Jamie Forbes moving onto the wing. Ayr’s Peter Jericevich won a start at nine, while his team-mate Murray McConnell was given the berth as replacement scrum-half.
A first half onslaught from the French, however, put aside hopes of becoming the first Scottish Club XV side to win both fixtures in the season as they lost out to France Fédérale, 44-10.
The Scots were only able to manage one penalty at goal, from Gala stand-off Lee Millar and a last gasp converted try for his teammate Craig Robertson, despite improving their defence, scrummaging, territory and kicking game in the second-half.
The hosts were simply too physical to cope with, for the minute half hour, and for French stand-off Julien Lavie it was quite a night, scoring 19 of their points.
Head coach, Phil Leck said afterwards: “We’re really disappointed, but this team were a different class and fair play to them on their success.
“We made a number of basic mistakes early on that cost us and for the rest of the match all we could do was fight back.
The boys stuck in well in the second-half and gave everything that they had but the mountain we had to climb was a bridge too far.”
