Sam Hidalgo-Clyne

An unused squad member of the 2014 Autumn Tests, Samuel Peter Hidalgo-Clyne made his full-international debut when he came off the bench to replace captain Greig Laidlaw in the opening game of the 2015 RBS 6 Nations Championship, away to France.

He went on to appear in every game in the tournament, coming on as a replacement each time.

Two appearances followed in the Summer Tests - including his first start against Italy in Turin - before being selected for the 31-man squad for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, coming on as a replacement against South Africa in Newcastle.

Hidalgo-Clyne graduated from the Edinburgh Rugby's Elite Development roster after two years early in 2014 and signed a contract tying him to the capital until summer 2016.

It was the following season that the youngster began to showcase his promise, putting in consistent performances to earn a senior club contract and, ultimately, his first senior Scotland appearance.

Taking on kicking duties midway through the 2014/15 season, his accuracy with the boot and elictrifying displays helped his club to the European Challenge Cup Final.

Through the ranks:

Sam, whose mother is Scottish, was born in Granada, Spain but returned to Scotland aged three. He attended Corstorphine Primary School and took up rugby at the Forrester club.

He won a scholarship from Royal High School to Merchiston Castle School as a stand-off before turning to scrum-half, where he earned a placed in the development squad of Edinburgh Rugby and further exposure on the 2013 MacPhail scholarship to New Zealand.

The scrum-half has represented Scotland at under-17 level and was a key part of the under-20 side in the 2013 age-grade RBS 6 Nations. Later that year, he made his Edinburgh Rugby debut against Munster.
