Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union
Introduction
The Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union, (L2CCRU) has been developed in conjunction with the English & Welsh Rugby Unions, together with the SQA and 1st4sport Qualifications. It is a vocationally related qualification studying both practical and theoretical aspects of coaching rugby union.

UKCC Level 2 Descriptor:- ‘Prepare for, deliver and review coaching session's’ E.g. Coach a group of players - club coach/ teacher
Qualification Objectives
On successful completion of the L2CCRU, candidates should be able to:
develop an appreciation of the ethical coaching process, the needs of the player and related issues in sports science
plan, conduct and evaluate a series of rugby union coaching sessions in a systematic and progressive manner
coach the basic skills and techniques of rugby union including, the scrummage, line-out, back-play, defence, continuity & counter-attack.
promote and establish positive working relationships and high standards of behaviour with - and among - players, other coaches, parents and officials
ensure the health and safety of players and others within the coaching environment and be able to respond to accidents and emergencies
develop greater responsibility for their own learning and development
promote the sport of rugby union in a positive and constructive manner
demonstrate an understanding of the principles of attack and defence through the use of practices and small-sided games
Qualification Outline
The course operates as a four day course spread throughout a calendar month. The course is primarily practical based, and you will be given several opportunities to coach and develop your coaching throughout the course. There are also home study tasks including the planning, delivery and review of coaching sessions.
The L2CCRU contributes to the provision of the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the Level 2 National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Coaching, Teaching and Instructing ( CTI ) and the breadth of the Technical Definition for Rugby Union. The NOS for CTI have been developed by people from the industry with a vast range of knowledge and experience. The standards provide a benchmark of good practice.
Pre-requisites:
Candidates are required to be 18 years of age or over before they can be registered for the qualification.
To Qualify for entry to level 2, candidates must possess a valid UKCC Level 1 qualification, a valid SRU Level 2 Step 1 Licence or above, or be a qualified PE teacher with an appropriate rugby background.
Candidates should demonstrate an involvement with the coaching / teaching of rugby and attendance at coaching seminars, courses or conferences. Please use the self-checker below to judge if you are ready for level 2.
Assessment:
Assessment is competency based allowing you to be continually assessed & receive support & action planning throughout the course. Candidates should also fulfil the home-study tasks. There is also an open book multi choice test.
Application:
Course costs £150 plus VAT (£176.26).
Coaches receive a Level 2 Coaching Resource Pack.
Completed Application Forms (PDF File below) must be attached with a Cheque made out to Scottish Rugby for the above amount. Please send in applications (including cheques) to Jennifer Dailly, Coaching Administrator, Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, EH12 5PJ.
Should your application for a course be unsuccessful, your cheque will be returned. There will however be a small standby list for each course.
NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT APPLICATION FORM AND CHEQUE / INVOICE ADDRESS
Candidates not attending Courses:-
If a candidate does not attend the course or who gives less than 48 hours notice of non attendance then he / she will receive no refund.
If a candidate gives between 2 and 14 days notice of cancellation, the candidate will be relocated to another course providing they pay an administration charge of £25. There will be no refund.
If a candidate gives more than 2 weeks notice they will be offered either relocation to another course at no charge or a refund of 75% of the course cost.
