Youth Recruitment and Retention Programme
In the 07/08 season youth player develo
pment will be provid
edthrough 5 series of youth development days run by Youth Coordinators in the following cluster areas:
·
Mi
dlands
· North
· Borders
· Glasgow and West of
Scotland
· Edinburgh and
East Lothian
This player recruitment and development programme will be complemented by regular tournaments. In accordance with the principles of Long Term Player Development the ratio of training to playing in the youth development programmes will be approximately 2:1.
The National Calendar outlines the structure of the programme and the tournament dates. Each cluster has its own locally agreed development dates in order to ensure that it best meets the needs of the players, schools and clubs in the area. These dates will be circulated at a local level.
Although the primary focus of the youth develo
pment days is the recruitment of younger players in S1 & S2, it is hop
edthat they will also provide players aged 16 and 17, even those already participating in senior rugby, with the opportunity to develop their rugby skills within their peer group.
Talent I.D. will take pl
ace through combin
edYouth Develo
pment Tournaments/Talent I.D. Days, a national Schools Talent I.D. day and a club Talent I.D. event. Young players with potential, who are ag
ed15-17 on 1st September will be signposted to trials for SWRU U18 Develo
pment.
How much does it cost?
Nothing! Entry into the Youth Development Day or youth tournaments is covered by the SWRU Affiliation fee. However, all players attending must be registered with the SWRU. Forms will be available on the day and player registration is FREE.
How can I help to run the Youth Development Days in my area?
The SWRU is looking out for committed and enthusiastic volunteer managers and coaches to assist with giving as many young players as possible the opportunity to enjoy the game of Rugby Union. Working with young players is a particularly satisfying (and often entertaining) way of strengthening and growing a game that many of us enjoy so much. If you are interested in what you can do to help, please contact the National Development Officer Lindsey Booth on Lindsey.booth@sru.org.uk.
Dispensation Forms
As you should be aware the Age Band
Review has been taking place, after a lengthy consultation process this
is now ready to be rolled out for Season 2007-08. The Youth Rules and Regulations for the new
season are now available for download from the SWRU downloads section
of the website (Under Rules and Regulations: SWRU Youth Rules and Regulations with Dispensations Forms.pdf) and will also shortly be available as part of the Rugby
Record.
Please read these new Rules & Regulations
thoroughly and ensure that any player requiring dispensation have the
relevant forms sent to the SWRU and have approval prior to a Youth Tournament or Cup Competition.
If you have any questions please email Claire Cruickshank and Louise Dalgiesh at youthrugby@swru.org.uk
