Coaching Essentials
The coaching essential courses in available to all new or novice coaches for whom this is their first coaching course. Coaches must be minimum 15 years of age to complete the course and must be actively coaching within a club or school.
Course Aims
The coaching essentials course aims to equip coaches with practical tools to enhance their coaching, covering 3 key areas:
How to create a positive and safe learning environment where all players are valued, and the aim is to provide high levels of activity, fun, and enjoyment.
Developing game understanding and skills through a game-based approach to training.
Developing individual players skills and techniques through a player centred approach.
The course also includes a tackle/contact safety session to ensure safe practice at all levels of the game, and to raise awareness of concussion protocols.

Coaches must be a minimum of 15 years of age to attend and must be actively coaching within a club or school. Coaches of mini, youth or adult teams can attend, with specific content tailored to specific age groups.

Pre-course learning
All coaches must have completed the following before attending the course:
- RugbyRight 2021-22 (available via SCRUMS)
- PVG check (if coaching mini or youth rugby)

Costs
In conjunction with sportscotland, Scottish Rugby is able to subsidise the course cost for those coaches and teachers working within our member and associate clubs, schools and universities to grow the game at a price of £30 (inc VAT).
Booking and Certification
All course bookings are administered via the SCRUMS system. To book onto one of the courses below you will need to register and create a profile on SCRUMS (if you don’t have an account already). Once you have completed your course, your course completion will be available to view on your SCRUMS profile, as well as information on next steps.
