BT Women’s Premier League PREVIEW | Ayr squad target improvement

Watsonians host Ayr in their final BT Women’s Premier League match of 2017 this Saturday (16 December, kick-off 2pm).

This is the second time the sides have met following the split with Watsonians running out comfortable winners in November.

However, Ayr beat Cartha Queens Park last week to record their first win of the league campaign and will be aiming to go into the Christmas break on a high.

The Ayr set-up are looking to build on the positives following a tough start to their season.

Head Coach of Ayr, Stuart Fenwick, said: “We went through a tough time early doors, with a lot of recruitment of new players and getting them integrated, but we have come through that and picked up our first win against Cartha last week.

“The average age of our squad is under 21 with many younger than that. It’s about supporting these players as they learn to play the game and prepare them for the demands of senior rugby.

“However, we are well aware that things are only going to get tougher as the season goes on.”

Recognising the challenges they face, the squad will not be resting on their laurels and will be putting in the graft at training when they come back in January.

Fenwick said: “We are aware that we need to continue to improve as we kick on in the second half of the season and the girls are working hard on their skills with a big focus on strength and conditioning.

“This is something that the club as a whole have put an emphasis on and the girls have really bought into it.”

A win for the west coast side would see them open a little more breathing space over bottom placed Cartha Queens Park who have a game in hand.

Watsonians will be eager to stretch their lead over Stewartry with a win this weekend.

Elsewhere this Saturday, in BT Women’s Premier League A, Hillhead/Jordanhill welcome Murrayfield Wanderers and RHC Cougars host Stirling County.
