PREVIEW: Girls Club Cup Finals 2019

PREVIEW: Girls Club Cup Finals 2019

Stirling County will be aiming for the double in the Girls’ Club Cup finals to build on last year’s performances which saw their U15 team lift the Cup and their U18s claim the runners-up spot in the U18 Cup competition.

In this year’s U18 Cup, Stirling stormed to victory early in the season against reigning champions Biggar. They then played Livingston for a spot in the final and came away with an impressive 50-0 score.

Donna Paterson, Stirling County Girls’ Convener, said: “Every year the players at Stirling County leave everything on the pitch in every game they play and this year is no different.

“The finals for both the U15 and U18 teams will bring a challenge and will require the players to find a strength and determination that is unique to this type of competition, I have no doubt that the girls will play with a positive mind-set, aiming to do their best and feed on the atmosphere of playing on the international pitch at BT Murrayfield.”

Stirling County U18 will face Cartha Queen’s Park in the final. The semi-final match in mid-April saw Cartha QP win 39-22 against Caithness and having won the U18 Shield last year they will be looking to take some more silverware home this year.

Cartha Queen’s Park U18 Head Coach, Alex Donaghy, said: “The girls are very excited to be in the Cup final for the first time as we have won the Shield the previous two years and this is great progress. It will be a good game against Stirling and we are looking forward to it.”

In the U15 Cup, Stirling County will defend their title against Highland. Stirling County beat Murrayfield Wanderers 61-7 in the semi-finals and Highland won 55-22 against Tayside and Fife Girls.

Eamon MacLeod, Highland U15 Head Coach, said: “Its been a whirlwind 18 months for girls’ rugby at Highland.

“Stirling County are a wonderful team that really support girls’ rugby; they are the benchmark for us all. It will be an honour to share the pitch with them, and we will enjoy the day no matter what happens.”
