The Tennent’s Club of the Month Award celebrates on-pitch performance, discipline and rugby development. A club does not have to be the best in all three areas, but should show a successful balance, with potential for long-term growth.

Each Club of the Month winner will receive £1,000 worth of Tennent’s portfolio for their clubhouse and a table for ten to attend the Scottish Rugby end of season Club Awards.

Tennent’s Club of the Month December 2018 – Boroughmuir RFC

Boroughmuir Rugby and Community Sports Club works hard to be a leading and integral part of a vibrant community based around Meggetland sports complex.

At senior club level, the 1st XV has already won more games than and is on track to amass more points than in recent years also. The 3rd XV continues to maintain its position in what is otherwise a 2nd XV league.

Integration is seen as an essential part of the club, one way they display this is assigning their future and senior squad members as ‘Champions’, attending team training sessions or games of the youth age-group squads from primary 4 upwards.

The club have enjoyed recent success through the Rugby Academy which launched at the beginning of the season, winning the Shogun Conference, which is the top division of the Mitsubishi Motors Conferences.

Boroughmuir President Stevie Douglas said, “The club is delighted to see that the efforts put in by its players, volunteer members and its investment in coaching being recognised with this award.”

He added, “The club has adopted a ‘One Club, One Culture, One Community’ ethos in its approach to development at all levels.”

Tennent’s Club of the Month November 2018 – Highland RFC

Highland has been a leading club, founded in 1922, with a vibrant youth section which hosts over 120 girls and boys who participate every Sunday, with the men’s team competing in the Tennent’s National League Division 2.

November was an extremely strong month for Highland on the pitch as they enjoyed four victories, three in the league and one in the cup, scoring 146 points and conceding 46.

The second XV also enjoyed a strong month with two wins, while there was success for their over 35’s team (Highland Bald Eagles) and good performances from their junior sides in the Shogun Conference.

Graham Findlater Vice President of the club said, “Highland RFC are a community club at the heart of the Highlands. We actively promote rugby for all ages and genders from nursery children to senior players.”

“We have used our recent move into state-of-the-art facilities to generate greater interest in rugby across our region, with playing and social memberships increasing by approximately 30% and non-rugby related clubhouse usage continuing to grow and provide income.

“We continue to work closely with our many sponsors, which has seen a 33% increase from last year and partner agencies, to develop rugby, for the benefit of all.”

The club are also the lead club following the creation of a new team which comprises of fringe players from Highland, Inverness Craig Dunain and Ross Sutherland rugby clubs. The team were able to field a second XV and played their first match in four years in 2018.

Tennent’s Club of the Month October 2018 – Strathmore RFC

Strathmore RFC were named Tennent’s Club of the Month in October for their commitment to promoting and developing rugby in the local community.

The club enjoyed an impressive start to their season, with their 1stXV securing a bonus point victory in all five of their league fixtures. The side also progressed to the quarter-final of the Caledonia Shield.

Last summer, the club was a Tartan Touch hub which brought males and females aged between 5-65 together to play the non-contact version of the game.
As a result of the growing number of female participants, the club were able to form a women’s team who played their first development match against Huntly at the end of September.

Strathmore’s President, Bob Baldie, said: “Following a very successful maiden Tartan Touch season, the club has grown in both playing numbers and supporters of the club at all age groups.

“We have successfully started running our own 2ndXV for the first time in recent years and reformed our women’s team.”

The club also works in partnership with The Strathmore Rugby Club Community Trust to deliver community projects. This has included a rugby academy designed to develop secondary age players as athletes and a ‘Walking Rugby’ programme.

A clan is being set up with Trust Rugby International and autistic rugby sessions are being developed in partnership with the local branch of Scottish Disability Sport and autism organisations.

Baldie continued: “The club continues to attract new sponsors which keeps our Business Development Consultant very busy.

“We are looking forward to a bright future at Strathmore and thank the hard work of the many volunteers.”

Tennent’s Club of the Month September 2018 – Oban Lorne

The club, which has been in existence since 1962, is currently enjoying a season to remember – impressing both on and off the pitch.

Oban’s Vice President and Secretary Murray Hamilton said on the news, “The club is thriving with the success of both the men’s and women’s teams creating a real buzz about rugby in the town.”

Hamilton continued, “There has been real strides to continue to boost rugby in the local area by the club. Our Junior section at the club is going from strength to strength and we are feeding numbers into the School of Rugby at Oban High School.”

The club currently field teams at boys U18, U16 and S1/S2 levels with success in both league and cups. They can also boast to having a girls U15 team and a thriving junior section, with over 30 kids regularly attending mini rugby sessions.
