Two debutants in Scotland 7s squad for London

Interim Scotland 7s Head Coach Scott Forrest has named two uncapped players in this 13-man squad for this weekend’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series tournament in London.

Fosroc Academy pair Kaleem Barreto and Kyle Rowe have been selected to feature at Twickenham where Scotland have been drawn against hosts England as well as New Zealand and Ireland.

Scrum-half Barreto made his Glasgow Warriors debut in the club’s 47-6 victory over Ospreys in the Guinness PRO14 last season and has spent this season playing for Glasgow Hawks in the Tennent’s Premiership.

Rowe comes into the squad fresh off a Tennent’s Premiership and Scottish Cup double with Ayr this season. The winger scored three tries across both finals and was named man-of-the-match as his side beat Heriot’s to be re-re-crowned Tennent’s Premiership champions at Milbrae.

The new faces join 10 core squad members and former Edinburgh Rugby winger Tom Brown at Twickenham where Scotland were back-to-back Cup winners in 2016 and 2017.

Interim Scotland 7s Head Coach Scott Forrest said: “Coming in, all the detail was already in place from previous tournaments, it has just been a case of making sure the team are in the right place heading into London.

“I’ve been really impressed with them. They’re a relatively young group but there’s a lot of experience in there and they’re clear on what they want to achieve.

“It’s a tough group but that’s the nature of the World Series, there are now no easy pool games, but we’re raring to go and looking forward to that first game against New Zealand.”
