U20 | Hogg to lead new look U20 coaching team
Scottish Rugby today announced the new Scotland U20 coaching team for next year’s U20 Six Nations Championship.
Former Worcester Warriors Head Coach, Carl Hogg – who toured Canada, USA and Argentina with the national coaching team this summer – has been appointed as the age-grade side’s Head Coach on a full-time basis.
Joining Hogg’s backroom team are former Scotland internationalists Scott Lawson and Nikki Walker, with the latter continuing in his position after serving as attack coach during June’s World Rugby U20 Championship.
On being named Head Coach, Hogg said: “I’m delighted with this opportunity to develop and help shape the next generation of Scotland rugby players.
"The different challenge of leading a young squad through a tournament format is an exciting prospect.
"Personally, I know it will be fascinating to watch this talented group grow and mature, something I enjoyed seeing with emerging players at my club sides who went on to represent their countries.”
The former Melrose, Leeds and Scotland back-row is a respected coach who has spent twelve years in the challenging environment of the English Premiership. He started his coaching career at Leeds alongside former England Head Coach and current Leinster Senior Coach, Stuart Lancaster.
After spells at London Welsh and Edinburgh Rugby, Hogg joined Gloucester as forwards coach in 2006 and added defence to his responsibilities as they challenged for top honours.
Hogg was named Head Coach of Worcester Warriors in 2013 and working alongside Dean Ryan, saw them enjoy success in the British & Irish Cup before winning promotion back to the Premiership in 2015.
He guided them to safety in the Premiership in back to back seasons before leaving Sixways and travelling with the Scotland national team this summer.
Former Scotland front-rower Scott Lawson is named as Assistant Coach. After retiring from professional rugby at the end of the 2017/18 season, the hooker was appointed Director of Rugby at St Andrews University.
Lawson brings a wealth of experience to the role following a 16 -year professional playing career which saw him make 169 English Premiership appearances for Sale Sharks, Gloucester, London Irish and finally Newcastle Falcons, while the Biggar RFC product spent four-years working under the guidance of then Gloucester forwards and defence coach, Hogg, at Kingsholm Stadium.
Walker, a two time PRO12 Champion with the Ospreys, who earned 24 caps for Scotland, continues in his coaching role with the age-grade side after overseeing the attack during the 2018 U20 Six Nations and World Rugby U20 Championship.
On the coaching trio’s appointment, Head of National Age Grade Sean Lineen, said: “I’m delighted to announce the Scotland U20 coaching team for next year’s U20 Six Nations Championship.
“Carl Hogg has coached at the top table of professional rugby and his experience in the game will be of great benefit to the next generation of Scottish age-grade players.
“Scott Lawson’s rugby pedigree is second to none, while Nikki Walker continues in his role after overseeing a Scotland U20 backline which made great strides in the recent World Rugby U20 Championship.
“I’ve got no doubt that this coaching team will continue the positive developments made in recent years.”
Scotland U20 host Italy, Ireland and Wales in next year’s U20 Six Nations campaign.
