South African-born Kwagga Van Niekerk qualifies for Scotland through his grandfather, whilst the back-row has previously been involved at Scottish age-grade levels.

Van Niekerk currently plays for Johannesburg-based side, The Lions, who compete in Super Rugby, whilst the back-row has also played cricket throughout South Africa.

The back-row made his Scotland U20 debut against Italy in the opening match of the 2019 U20 Six Nations and was named in the age-grade side's squad for the World Rugby U20 Championship in Argentina.
